Prof. Tonya Evans talks facts and myths of copyright, free exchange & the Web on WITF Radio Smart Talk 7/23 9AM ET

Digital technology and the Internet has forever changed the way people create, distribute and access creative literary and artistic productions. The World Wide Web platform allows with few if any express barriers for anyone to copy, adapt and “share” perfect digital copies of arts and information via peer-to-peer networks, e-mail, blogs, social networking media and other means.

Copyright law, however, is not nearly so permissive. Many people share content they find on the Internet but are you doing it legally? How do you know for sure? Because, after all, something that is available on the Internet does not equal something freely available in the “public domain”, at least as defined by copyright law.

Get the answers to these and other questions in plain English from intellectual property and entertainment law expert Associate Professor Tonya M. Evans,  on WITF Radio Smart Talk, Monday, July 23rd at 9-10 AM Eastern (89.5 and 93.3, Central Pennsylvania and available via live stream).

During the show you will:

  • Learn how to avoid infringing copyright in the online environment
  • Identify what’s considered fair use
  • Learn how to protect and share your own literary and artistic productions; and
  • Explore the free exchange of information debate

The discussion is based on Copyright Companion for Writers, by Tonya Evans.

The inspiration for this important topic came from a WITF Radio Smart Talk listener a few weeks ago. Scott LaMar Director of Smart Talk WITF explains:

It is a very timely topic.  With the technology available to us and our use of the internet, social media and new gadgets and devices, there are unending opportunities to access, copy or download materials that may be copyrighted.  Or maybe not.  Maybe they’re in the public domain. Many of us share content we see but are we doing it legally and how do we find out for sure?”
